Top 10 Fat-Burning Food

I’m always looking for ways to boost my metabolism naturally and today I want to share the best fat-burning food and herbs that I use throughout the day. They all have worked for me. Certain foods have a high thermogenic effect that definitely impact your body’s ability to burn fat. And, some herbs contain compounds that boost your metabolism as well. By just incorporating a few of these on a regular basis you will watch your body fat disappear.

Here’s a list of my favorites.

#1 – Chicken, turkey & beef: Protein has a high thermogenic effect. You burn about 30% of the calories the food contains during digestion (so a 300-calorie chicken breast requires about 90 calories to break it down).

# 2 – Green Tea: Drinking four cups of green tea a day helped people shed more than six pounds in eight weeks, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. EGCG, a compound in green tea is what speeds up your metabolism after drinking it. #3 – Carbohydrates: Complex Carbohydrates are fat-burners. Your body burns twice as many calories breaking down whole foods (especially those rich in fiber like oatmeal and brown rice) than processed foods. Unlike processed/simple carbs that set you up to crash and consistently crave them, complex carbs are rich in fiber, low-glycemic and the best part is you burn more calories breaking them down.

#4 – Eggs: Eggs are a great fat-burning food – especially the yolk. We've been told over and over again that eggs are high in cholesterol and we shouldn't eat them. However, studies show that dietary cholesterol has very little effect on blood cholesterol levels. Your body’s cholesterol levels are typically a result of high arterial inflammation caused by processed carbohydrates. Free-range eggs are packed with essential fatty acids and protein – definitely a great combination for a fat-burning food. Research from the International Journal of Obesity has shown that eating 2 eggs a day along with a healthy diet (which means the rest of your day was not garbage food) will help you lose weight.

#5 - Almonds: Almonds have a few fat burning ingredients. One is their healthy fats, polyunsaturated & monounsaturated fats. These fats help prevent you from overeating by making you feel fuller quicker. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition support this by showing how eating almonds suppresses your hunger. Almonds are the perfect food to have when you are on the go and do not have time for a meal. Just keep your intake under 20 a day because all nuts are high in fat.

#6 - Herbs: Cayenne Pepper contains Capsaicin, the compound that gives peppers their heat, may help fight obesity by decreasing calorie intake, shrinking fat tissue, and lowering blood fat levels, as well as fight fat buildup by triggering beneficial protein changes in your body.

Research suggests that consuming thermogenic ingredients can boost your metabolism by up to 5 percent, and increase fat burning by up to 16 percent. It may even help counteract the decrease in metabolic rate that often occurs during weight loss.

#7 - Low Fat Cheese: Low fat cheese like the Italian Parmigiana-Reggiano cheese. This low calorie, high calcium cheese activates your body’s fat-burning hormones. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin also stated, “Because of its high protein content, higher than any other cheese, it makes you stay fuller longer.” And remember, your body uses more energy to break down protein so you are burning more calories.

#8 – Vegetables and Fruit: Broccoli and other cruciferous like kale help burn belly fat. They are low calorie, zero fat vegetables that can accompany any meal. Broccoli and kale both have a lot of fiber and a host of other health benefits. Berries are high in nutrients including antioxidants. When you buy them frozen their freshness is locked in and they can be kept for some time and used in a variety of ways.. Add them to your oatmeal, cereal, low fat ice cream or yogurt.

#9 – Coffee: Coffee is the #1 choice of beverage people use for that awesome pick-me-up in the mornings, or after those really long afternoon meetings. In the past coffee has gotten a bad rap. Because of all the caffeine contained in it. But recently research is turning up all sorts of benefits because like green tea, coffee has fat-burning qualities that translates into big losses in calories over time. The caffeine in just one cup can boost calorie burning by four percent over the course of two and half hours. Skip all the added sugars and creams in order to reap the full benefits of the fat burning properties. #10 - Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt has been getting attention as a healthier form of yogurt. This is because it packs a bigger protein punch, with less sugar than ordinary yogurt. But you don’t have to give up regular yogurt altogether, and there are other foods that Greek yogurt can fill in for.
You can use plain Greek yogurt as a reasonable substitute for sour cream and shave off plenty of calories and fat grams. You can also include it in your smoothies.
